Grab Boosts Ride Safety for Teens with ‘Grab for Family’ Feature

Grab Philippines is giving Filipino teenagers greater independence while helping parents stay connected to their journeys through the introduction of Grab for Family, a feature designed to provide teens aged 13 to 17 with more freedom to book rides while giving parents and guardians added visibility and safety controls throughout each trip.

With Grab for Family, teenagers can independently book their own rides while parents can receive real-time updates, monitor trips through a live map, communicate with both the teen and driver, and access additional safety features. The service aims to give families greater peace of mind while making everyday transportation more convenient.

The growing adoption of Grab Family Accounts among Filipino households also highlights the increasing role of shared mobility in everyday family life. According to Grab, sign-ups have more than doubled over the past year, while family members who join an account take about 70% more rides during their first month. The figures underscore how shared access can help families manage their daily transportation needs more efficiently.

Grab for Family Keeps Parents Connected

For parents, Grab for Family provides a way to stay informed without constantly calling or messaging their teenagers during a ride. The feature includes Live Ride Tracking, Trip Monitoring, and automated trip notifications, allowing parents to receive important updates throughout the journey.

Parents can be notified when a driver is assigned, vehicle details become available, the passenger is picked up, the destination is reached, and the trip is completed. Through the live map, parents can also follow the ride in real time.

The monitoring tools are designed to provide additional visibility when a trip does not go as expected. Parents may receive alerts about unexpected stops or route deviations, while in-app prompts can also check in with the passenger to help confirm that they are safe.

Built-In Safety Features for Teen Passengers

Beyond real-time trip monitoring, Grab for Family brings together several safety and communication features designed to support teenagers throughout their rides.

One of these is Ride PIN, which provides an additional verification step before a trip begins. The passenger and driver must match a unique in-app code before proceeding, helping ensure that the teenager enters the correct vehicle.

The feature also includes 3-Way Chat, allowing parents to join the in-app conversation between the teen and driver. This shared communication channel can be used to clarify pickup locations, landmarks, and other important trip details without moving the conversation to another messaging platform.

Another safety feature is AudioProtect, which enables encrypted audio recording on both the passenger's and driver's devices during a ride. The recordings remain encrypted and cannot be accessed by either party. They are reviewed by Grab's safety team only when a formal report is submitted.

These features work alongside Grab's Safety Center and Emergency Help functions, providing users with access to localized assistance and emergency support when necessary.

Easy Family Account Setup Through the Grab App

Setting up Grab for Family can be done through the existing Grab app. Parents can invite a teenager using the teen's mobile number or by sending a unique invitation link. After the teenager accepts the invitation, the parent approves the request and identifies the account as belonging to a teen, activating the applicable safety features.

Once the accounts are connected, parents can also manage shared payment methods and adjust available safety settings according to their family's needs.

Grab Philippines Head of Mobility CJ Lacsican said safety and peace of mind remain important priorities for the company when serving families. The company continues to develop features that allow parents to stay informed about their teenagers' journeys while giving young passengers greater confidence to travel independently.

Grab for Family Supports Filipino Families

The introduction of Grab for Family comes as more Filipino households rely on ride-hailing services for everyday transportation, including school, extracurricular activities, appointments, and other daily trips.

Lisza Buscaino-Redulla, President of the United Transportation Coalition Philippines, Inc., also highlighted the importance of giving parents greater assurance when their teenage children use ride-hailing services. As more families depend on platforms such as Grab for their children's daily commutes, features that combine independence, communication, and safety can provide added peace of mind.

With Grab for Family, Filipino parents can give their teenagers more freedom to move around while maintaining access to important trip information and safety tools. The feature reflects the growing demand for family-friendly mobility solutions that balance independence with parental visibility.
